The Gates Foundation has given the Public Library of 
Science a $1.1 million grant to launch PLoS Neglected 
Tropical Diseases, an open access, peer-reviewed journal 
devoted to science, policy, and advocacy on neglected 
tropical diseases, a topic few journals focus on. Some of 
the diseases to be addressed are elephantiasis, river 
blindness, leprosy, hookworm, schistosomiasis, etc. The 
journal will begin accepting submissions in 2007.
