Headline: NIH Public Access Mandate
Contents:
Recently passed law mandates that the Director of the
National Institutes of Health require that all
investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted
for them to the National Library of Medicines PubMed
Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed
manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made
publicly available no later than 12 months after the
official date of publication. It applies to NIH-funded
grants active during FY08 and to contracts signed on or
after April 7, 2008. Non-compliance may delay or prevent
the awarding of funds. The NIH homepage has an FAQ at
publicaccess.nih.gov/FAQ.htm to help answer questions
about the change in policy. This represents a milestone in
getting information out to all the people of the United
States and elsewhere who seek publicly-funded medical
information.
